As the new writers take the helm, they’ve missed the mark in several areas, leading to 17 straight weeks of low ratings. Here are the five major missteps currently plaguing “General Hospital.”

1. Anna Devane’s Out-of-Character Actions

Anna Devane has always been a character of strong moral conviction. However, her recent decision to let Valentin Cassadine go while investigating him is a glaring inconsistency. After chastising Dante for a conflict of interest and warning Sonny Corinthos that he wouldn’t get off the hook, Anna’s leniency towards Valentin feels out of place. Pikeman, like Sonny, has a dark side, and Anna’s defense that Valentin has a daughter feels weak. Anna has always been on the side of the law, and watching her compromise her principles for Valentin undermines her character’s integrity. The sudden ending of the Pikeman storyline, which seemed to reset Anna’s moral compass, felt abrupt and unsatisfying.

Losing James Patrick Stuart, who plays Valentin, would be a significant loss for the show. He’s an excellent actor who brings depth to his role. If Valentin’s departure is permanent, it’s a mistake. If he stays, perhaps turning into a full Cassadine villain could redeem this storyline.

2. Mishandling Jason Morgan’s Return

Jason Morgan’s return should have been a major event, but instead, it’s fallen flat. His storyline has lacked momentum and direction. Jason’s reason for leaving—to protect Carly—once again puts her above everyone else in his life, even his children. The lack of romantic development between Jason and Carly, despite their deep connection, feels inconsistent. Jason’s return has been underwhelming, and the potential rekindling of his romance with Carly remains unresolved.

The dynamic between Jason and his children, Danny and Jake, is one of the few positives in his return. However, the writers seem to have brought back Steve Burton without a clear plan for Jason’s character. Is he destined to remain in the friend zone with Carly, working at the coffee warehouse, and lacking any substantial plot? It’s a disappointing outcome for such a pivotal character.

3. The Inexplicable Introduction of Gio

Gio’s introduction to “General Hospital” has left many fans puzzled. While he’s a talented violinist and an okay actor, his presence seems misplaced. The emphasis on Gio’s origins and potential secret parentage has sparked unnecessary speculation. Fans fear he might be revealed as someone’s mystery son, potentially even Sonny’s, which would add another unnecessary complication to the already convoluted family tree.

Moreover, if Gio was intended to be Trina’s new love interest, that storyline hasn’t progressed. Recasting Spencer or bringing back Cam would have been more compelling choices. While Gio is a talented young man, his character lacks a clear purpose, and the show could have explored more relevant storylines.

4. Natalia’s Outdated Storyline

Eva LaRue’s Natalia, while played by a talented actress, is a character that feels both unnecessary and out of place. The storyline involving Natalia, Blaze, and Christina is outdated and lacks relevance. Natalia’s homophobia, though reflective of real-world issues, is handled in a way that feels tone-deaf and regressive for 2024. Making Natalia a victim in this scenario is problematic and diminishes the narrative’s impact.

The decision to involve Perez Hilton in the plot, given his controversial history of outing celebrities, only adds to the storyline’s tone-deafness. GH would not lose anything by dropping this plot and focusing on more current and engaging narratives. The show needs to move beyond outdated tropes and embrace more progressive storytelling.
